'Kindle in Us the Fire of Your Love' - The Holy Spirit as Hope, Peace, and Unrest. Four classes
Instructor: Don Schweitzer, PhD
1. The Holy Spirit – general introduction.
This session will focus on different ways in which the Spirit is depicted in Scripture, its various characteristics and roles, and then the way it has been understood as part of the Trinity.
2. The Holy Spirit as Hope.
This session will begin by looking at the Holy Spirit as the source and enhancer of life. It will then look at the Spirit’s presence as common and saving grace. It will look at the Spirit’s indirect versus its direct work. It will examine the Holy Spirit as a source of openness, as a source of charismatic leadership and working through institutions, the Spirit’s presence and work in times of chaos and destruction, and the Holy Spirit as a source of wisdom and virtue.
3. The Holy Spirit as Peace.
This session will begin by looking at the Holy Spirit as the gift of peace given by Christ, and the dove as a symbol of the Spirit. It will explore the nature of this peace, its practical effects, its roots in Jesus’ cross and resurrection, and the need that people tend to have for peace.
4. The Holy Spirit as Unrest.
This session will begin by defining ‘unrest’ in relation to hope and peace. It will then look at examples in Scripture of unrest and in more recent public events and the actions of public individuals. It will examine where the Spirit’s unrest comes from, what it expresses, and what it seeks.
